Project Vault will focus on reducing reliance on hostile foreign nations for rare earths.

President Donald Trump’s administration is preparing to launch Project Vault, a critical minerals stockpile similar to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for oil. The move is intended to reduce the United States’ reliance on China and other hostile countries for rare earths. After President Trump put tariffs in place last year, China restricted the amount of critical minerals it would export.

The project will gather minerals, such as gallium and cobalt, that are used in electronics and technology, including cell phones, electric batteries, semiconductors, and jet engines. The military also relies heavily on rare earths.

Several companies have signed onto the project, which will be financed through private capital as well as a loan from the U.S. Export-Import Bank. Three commodity trading houses have committed to handling the transactions.

An inaugural critical minerals summit will be held at the State Department on Wednesday.
